What AI detectors actually measure
Detectors have no database of AI text to compare against. They measure two statistical properties of your writing:

| Perplexity | How predictable each word is, given the words before it | Low — every word is the expected one |
| Burstiness | How much sentence length and complexity vary | Low — everything is the same length and rhythm |
This is why clear, formal, consistent writing gets flagged whether a human or a machine wrote it — and why non-native English writing is misclassified at markedly higher rates.
What to do with a high score
- Vary your sentence lengths. If five consecutive sentences all run 18–25 words, that alone will flag.
- Replace abstraction with specifics. "Studies show" becomes "Chen and Park (2024) found". This is the highest-value change and it raises your marks independently.
- Take a position. Endless hedging reads as machine-generated and loses marks for lacking argument.
- Keep your version history. If you are wrongly accused, a document that grew over days with edits is the strongest evidence there is.
